In a statement this afternoon, the US Department of State said that Mr Kennedy will focus on"advancing economic development and investment opportunities in Northern Ireland to the benefit of all communities as well as strengthening people-to-people ties between the United States and Northern Ireland".

"His role builds on the long-standing US commitment to supporting peace, prosperity, and stability in Northern Ireland and the peace dividends of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement," it added."Look forward to working with the Biden Admin to reaffirm US commitment to Northern Ireland and to promote economic prosperity and opportunity for all its people," he posted to Twitter.

The US Ambassador to Ireland, Claire Cronin, said the appointment of Mr Kennedy shows Mr Biden's"continued, steadfast support for the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, which he views as an historic achievement that must be protected to ensure peace and stability in Northern Ireland". "Joe Kennedy is an extraordinary public servant, and I know he will work tirelessly in this role increasing investment and economic growth in Northern Ireland, as well as strengthening people-to-people ties between all communities in Northern Ireland and the United States," Ms Cronin added,

Mr Kennedy served as the US representative for Massachusetts's 4th congressional district from 2013 to 2021.
