Blackpool's Conservative group leader, Tony Williams, said it was better for transparency this way
Blackpool Conservatives have won a battle for their members to take control of some town hall committees.
Conservative group leader Coun Tony Williams, who put forward the amendment, said he could not see how “a political party can scrutinise itself”, and said the change would add a further layer of transparency to decision-making. Independent councillor Martin Mitchell said: “Labour has not got the majority of seats anymore, so I don’t think they can legitimately claim to have all the scrutiny chairs.”
The council was being asked to agree revised memberships of committees following changes in the political make-up of the council. Labour remains the majority group with 20 councillors, while there are 14 Conservatives, three members of Blackpool Independents, and five Independent non-aligned councillors.
