Emergency services responded to an incident on Thursday afternoon in Cork City where an elderly woman was seen entering the River Lee. Despite the efforts of firefighters who entered the water to rescue her, the woman was found unresponsive and later pronounced deceased.

A body has been recovered after an elderly woman was seen entering the River Lee in Co Cork on Thursday afternoon. The woman, who is believed to be in her late 60s, entered the water at Pope's Quay before she was seen further downstream and the alarm was raised. Emergency services, including gardai, Cork City Fire Service and the National Ambulance Service attended the scene.

A number of firefighters entered the water at Merchant's Quay - around a hundred metres from Pope's Quay - to rescue her, while others waited at the edge of the river to help pull her out. However, when officers from Cork City Fire Brigade recovered the woman's body from the water at around 1.30pm yesterday afternoon, she was found to be unresponsive, Cork Beo reports. Her body was removed from the scene and taken to Mercy University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place in due course. In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: 'Gardaí assisted emergency services with the recovery of a body of a woman from River Lee in Cork city on Thursday 13th February. 'Her body has since been removed to Mercy University Hospital.' It's understood the incident is being treated as a personal tragedy. Eyewitnesses said they saw the woman being pulled downstream by strong currents but did not see her enter the water. They said emergency services were quick to act after the alarm was raised. A woman who was working in the area told Cork Beo it was 'never easy to see' such an incident. 'It's never easy to see, definitely a shock,' she said.
