Boiling 4000 years of Spanish history into one exhibition? Doomed to fail Review: ⭐⭐⭐
I was thrilled by the prospect of a show that seemed to promise “treasures” from Spain and the Hispanic world. I had imagined social critique and courtly intrigue from Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya, religious torment from El Greco, spirited observations from Sofonisba Angissola. From the Hispanic World, I was hoping for glories from the great mesoamerican civilisations – the Olmec, Maya and Aztec.
Radical in the early century, and able to pull in blockbuster crowds for a contemporary exhibition of sun-drenched paintings by Sorolla in 1909, the Hispanic Society progressively dropped off the cultural radar and out of public view. Over the past decade a go-getting new director and a shake up to the board have resulted in a drive to renovate the building and modernise its outlook.
Yes, there are some good paintings here: a luminous little portrait of a solemn girl by Diego Velázquez; a stirringly physical showing a young Afro-Hispanic man carrying a heavy basket of ripe fruit. There are Sorollas aplenty – beach scenes full of clingy garments and wet skin, a garden abundant with garish blooms. Lovely if you’re a fan; I happen not to be – it’s all too cloying.
