It caused two miles of slow moving traffic

'Boy racers' have been blamed by police for causing traffic to be stopped on the M1. Just after 10pm on Sunday night, Highways England Tweeted to say that traffic was held at J28 on the northbound carriageway near Alfreton.

This was because of a multi-vehicle collision. There was almost two miles of slow moving traffic on the approach. An update was posted just after 10.30pm to say the vehicles were recovered to the slip road, when traffic was released and the slip road was down to one lane of two but has since been fully reopened. And Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit posted on Twitter that the incident was because of 'boy racers'.

"A huge shout out to Highways England East Midlands for their assistance with this incident. Their attendance and assistance resulted in a perfectly sterile environment for staff to work in, quick recovery and re-opening of the motorway."
