In a new Sky documentary, Boyzone: No Matter What, Mikey Graham opens up about his challenging experience in the band, including a period of estrangement from manager Louis Walsh and feelings of being sidelined musically. He also discusses the band's tumultuous history, including conflicts with bandmates and the impact of Stephen Gately's death.
Boyzone star Mikey Graham has told how he wanted to leave the band because it was “a toxic environment” – saying manager Louis Walsh didn’t speak to him for seven years.
Mikey, 52, admits he was struggling to contribute musically and was sent away to work on it, but later discovered they recorded their first album without him. The Dubliner admits he wanted to walk away from the group but always calmed down because he had to financially support his young daughter. But when Ronan suggested the band take a break for a year, he said: “It was music to my ears because I had had enough.” But Mikey said when the group reunited again in 2007, he felt “part of the band for the first time”.Mikey added: “It had reached a complete stage of malignancy. I had enough.
And Shane adds: “I’ve not spoke to Mick for four years. I think there is an element of the industry that damaged him. Mikey, himself, is quite the recluse.”Ronan added: “If I’m being honest, I think Mikey was a little bit lost in a boyband.”
