Joseph Brennan, the 82-year-old founder of Brennans Bread, left almost €35 million in his will after his death in May. The iconic bakery, which started in a single room, has grown to be one of the largest in Ireland.
The founder of Brennans Bread , Joseph Brennan, has died, leaving almost €35 million in his will. The 82-year-old passed away last May, 55 years after founding his iconic bakery in a small room on Fumbally Lane in Dublin. Newly released probate records show he left a total of €34,833,883 in his estate. \From its humble beginnings, Brennans later moved to Kimmage and then Walkinstown, where its main centre of operations is now.
It soon extended sales beyond Dublin to the rest of Ireland, and even overseas. It is now one of the largest bakeries in Ireland, but remains under the control of the Brennan family. The business also proved a trailblazer in terms of marketing, developing iconic radio advertisements featuring the “Old Mr Brennan” character, modelled on its founder. The adverts so captured the public imagination that many customers actually believed they were voiced by the firm’s owner rather than by an actor. \Brennans sliced pan went viral on social media in 2018 when it became one of the most sought-after necessities during the Beast from the East. The veteran businessman was hailed at his funeral for being a “visionary”. Mourners heard he had not only steered his firm through difficult economic years, but also foresaw many future trends, allowing it to stay ahead of its competitors
