Brigit : Dublin city Celebrating Women returns this Friday for its fourth edition, taking over various venues across the city from January 31st to February 3rd. Over 100 thematic events will celebrate women's contributions to culture, society, and history. This year's Brigit parade, featuring walkers, roller skaters, Brigit s on bikes, dancers, and more, will commence at the top of Capel Street on Sunday at 3:30pm.
The Imbolc Fair will return for its third year, taking over Meeting House Square in Dublin from 12-4:30pm on Sunday. The fair will offer music from DJ Louise Bruton, tasty treats and coffee from Bahay, flower crown-making with Flowerpop, and blacksmithing demonstrations with 9 Irons forge.Throughout the weekend, special events will honor the legacy of the Celtic goddess Brigit. Stories will focus on Brigit's multifaceted legacy, covering themes like Wisdom, Nature, Rebellion, and Healing. Expect a blend of spoken word, live music, poetry, and personal anecdotes from special guests including multidisciplinary artist Pippa Moloney, poet and performer Natalya O’Flaherty, singer-songwriter Farah Elle, and Limerick activist Natasha O’Brien. Attendees can also participate in screen printing workshops, choosing from two designs by Jill & Gill specially commissioned for Brigit 2024 and 2025. Kildare will celebrate St Brigid through the theme Her Spirit, Our Story, with special concerts and events in collaboration with Hot Press honoring Brigid's life. A free public concert on St Brigid's Day will feature some of Ireland's most essential women artists, including Sharon Shannon, Lyra, and Irish Women in Harmony. The Triskel Arts Centre in Cork will host a day dedicated to healing and growth, leaning into the concept of Imbolc and new beginnings. Led by Lewis Barfoot, the day will incorporate dancing, chanting, movement, and a lamenting ceremony inspired by the tradition of keening. The day will conclude with a relaxing cup of tea. Bundoran, County Donegal, will also celebrate with a weekend dedicated to the celebration of women. The programme includes art and poetry receptions, an open mic night, a cocktail hour, and talks on topics like Grace O’Malley, Ireland’s pirate queen. There will be knitting, printing, and art workshops, as well as a craft market in the Bundoran Community Centre. DJ sets and live music nights will also take place.Killorglin will host the unique traditions of the Kerry-specific Biddy’s Day. The day focuses on craft and tradition, with Biddy groups in straw hats holding Brídeóg dolls as they parade through the town with lanterns and flaming torches.Workshops on making the traditional Brigid’s cross using fresh rushes will take place in various locations. Workshops are scheduled in St Reginald’s Tower, Waterford, and the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin. Booking is essential for these workshops due to limited spaces.
