A group tasked with investigating the impact of AI on healthcare recommends an independent commissioner and a national strategy to oversee AI use in the health sector.

There have been calls for the Government to establish a regulatory body to oversee the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the healthcare system. This recommendation comes from a group tasked with investigating the impact of technology on the health sector, known as 'The Citizen’s Jury on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare'. This group was established by the Irish Platform for Patient Organisations, Science and Industry (IPPOSI).

AI is already being utilized to assist with medical diagnoses, including in radiology departments. For example, in an accident and emergency setting, if a patient arrives with a suspected ankle fracture, an X-ray can be taken. AI-powered tools can then assist non-specialist doctors in detecting a fracture, enabling prompt and appropriate treatment. While radiologists will still review these images, AI helps ensure patients receive timely care. Beyond diagnostics, AI can assist doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists with diagnoses and provide advice on patient care. As AI technology advances, it may even be able to analyze patient data from electronic health records and genetics to suggest the most suitable treatment options. Professor Alan Smeaton, a computing professor at Dublin City University (DCU), highlighted that AI is already being integrated into healthcare systems in various ways, including prevention through risk modeling and screening, detection through image analysis, treatment and diagnostics, and rehabilitation. Given the transformative potential of AI in healthcare, the Citizen’s Jury emphasized the need for human oversight in all its applications. The group has made a range of recommendations, all centered around ensuring that human expertise remains integral to AI-driven healthcare. This approach aims to harness the benefits of AI while mitigating potential risks and maintaining patient safety
