The Office of Public Works (OPW) reportedly spent €490,000 on replacing an “unsafe” 70m wall outside the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) on Lansdowne Road in leafy Dublin 4

The opposition has called on the Office of Public Works - or the Office of Posh Walls as it has been dubbed - to explain how a wall cost nearly €500,000 to construct.

The works were originally expected to cost around €200,000 exclusive of VAT. However, a live ESB cable and a leaking pipe were discovered during preliminary works, leading to extensive delays and unforeseen costs. Opposition TDs have now called for an explanation of how the project’s cost escalated so significantly, with Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín saying that the “Office of Posh Walls has questions to answer”.

“The OPW are divorced from the cost reality of the rest of the country. The OPW is operating like a luxury brand for a coddled political class. The culture within the OPW is incredible. After spending €336,000 on the Bike Shed in Leinster House, the OPW published a tender for a new €600,000 PR contract to improve its ‘public profile and reputation’.”
