Jimmy Harmon underwent chemo while homeless in Houston. After his death, his friends mourned the quiet, generous and uncomplaining man, and his family grappled with the news that their bright and athletic brother had passed away without a home.
Hector Reyes, right, changes the dressing on Jimmy Harmon's back where a tube drains fluid from his kidneys, on Friday, March 4, 2022, in Houston.Over the past four years, in between laughs over coffee at Jack in the Box and afternoons streaming football games, Hector Reyes accompanied Jimmy Harmon to doctors appointments as his friend battled prostate cancer.
Harmon died Sunday afternoon in an assisted living home after a long fight with prostate cancer, Reyes said. He would’ve been 65 years old in December.Friends living in a homeless encampment on the eastern edge of town and those who had moved on elsewhere struggled to accept that the quiet, generous and uncomplaining man was no longer with them.
Harmon and Reyes met at Star of Hope, Reyes said. At the time, Reyes had just gotten out of prison after being convicted of sexual assault. In prison, he said, he lived with many people with disabilities, such as severe arthritis, and had learned how to listen and help. Lance Cosper, who once lived in the camp, said he never heard Harmon complain – even when he started chemotherapy, which made Harmon feel ill and lose weight. At one point, the former football player’s frame dwindled to a mere 129 pounds, Harmon said before he passed away. But he persevered, and his health rebounded – in March, he weighed 175.
