Harry Russell - who was only 26 - died after the freak accident

A young chef suffered fatal injuries in a freak accident at his home in south Dublin when he fell down a stairway and hit his head off a tumble dryer, an inquest has heard.

The inquest heard that the Perspex door of the tumble dryer had been shattered by the impact. Dr Bolster said there was no evidence of any other significant trauma and Mr Russell had suffered no fractures. Fighting back tears, Ms Starr remarked: “I lost a son because of that tumble dryer.” She noted that a clothes horse had previously occupied the same location.

Mr Russell’s girlfriend, Niamh Mahon, said her boyfriend whom she had known for over two years had gone to his work at Milano restaurant in Dún Laoghaire at lunchtime the previous day. She dialled the emergency services after failing to detect any breathing or pulse coming from her boyfriend. In reply to questions from the coroner, Cróna Gallagher, she said she had also had trouble with the stairs and had fallen coming down them.
