Chris O'Dowd brings his Irish roots to life in the new comedy series 'Small Town, Big Story,' filmed near his mother's home in rural Ireland. The series explores the chaos that ensues when a major television production arrives in a small fictional town, drawing inspiration from O'Dowd's experiences filming 'Moone Boy.'

Chris O'Dowd, renowned for his role in The IT Crowd, is embarking on a journey to explore his Irish roots with the upcoming series Small Town , Big Story. Filmed near his mother's residence in rural west Ireland, O'Dowd brought a touch of Hollywood back home. When conceptualizing the setting for the show, O'Dowd yearned for a small, village-like atmosphere, envisioning his mother's home situated about 10 miles outside Boyle.

Having previously filmed Moone Boy in Boyle, he expressed a desire to return. This six-part comedy revolves around the chaos that ensues when a major television production arrives in the fictional small town of Drumban. The plot draws heavily from O'Dowd's personal experiences while filming the cult classic Moone Boy. Initially, the residents of Drumban revel in the excitement and buzz surrounding the production. However, as time progresses, the novelty wears off, replaced by annoyance and frustration. O'Dowd shared that he found humor in the locals' behavior during the filming of Moone Boy, observing how people would adorn themselves in their finest attire or apply more makeup, hoping to be captured on camera. O'Dowd not only spearheads the show but also takes on the role of author Jack E McCarthy. He described the character as a complete braggart, admitting to a fondness for those who exude a bit of confidence and swagger. Joining O'Dowd in the cast are notable actors Paddy Considine, known for his role in House of the Dragon, and Christina Hendricks, acclaimed for her performance in Mad Men. Considine portrays town doctor Seamus Proctor, while Hendricks takes on the character of Wendy Patterson, a local girl who achieved success as a TV producer in Los Angeles and returns home after a 20-year absence. However, both characters harbor a secret from Millennium Eve that threatens to be exposed by the arrival of the TV production. O'Dowd revealed that his wife, TV presenter Dawn O'Porter, played a crucial role in securing Hendricks' involvement in the project. During a phone call with his wife, who was in California at the time, she mentioned that Christina Hendricks had visited their house. Intrigued, O'Dowd thought Hendricks would be a perfect fit for the show and reached out to her. Interestingly, Hendricks' character, Wendy, has lost her Irish accent, unlike many Irish Americans O'Dowd encounters in real life. He noted that he frequently meets individuals who sound as if they have never been to Ireland but suddenly adopt a strong Irish accent after a few minutes of conversation. He felt that her character's choice to abandon her accent added a unique dimension to her portrayal. O'Dowd also disclosed that he bonded with Considine over the music featured in the series. There is a distinctive blend of brass and Irish music, and Considine's character, Seamus, plays the trombone. Both O'Dowd and Considine took trombone lessons to ensure their understanding of the instrument. Small Town, Big Story is scheduled to premiere on Sky Atlantic on February 27th
