Ciara was a working mom of four living an ordinary suburban life when her first dabble in the media presented itself
Ciara Kelly co-hosts one of the country’s most listened to radio programmes, Newstalk Breakfast show with Shane Coleman. However Ciara is also a qualified doctor and worked as GP in her local Greystones for many years.
“It was a long road before I went full time into media, but how I made the initial foray was I had moved to Greystones to be close to my mum after my dad died suddenly in 2002. I was working as a GP, my kids were small, I was living a very normal, suburban life. “We were chatting and I said, ‘I kind of feel sorry for the protestors, not because they’re closing their hospitals, but because they’re protesting to save something that isn’t worth saving’. To have your best chance at beating cancer you need to be somewhere good, and peripheral hospitals around the country shouldn’t be offering those services.
“So it started with no intention behind it whatsoever and I still have a weekly column with the Sunday Independent”. “In 2009 TV3 asked me to be their weekly doctor on the couch on one of their morning shows. In 2013 RTE came knocking and asked me to make a series for them, in 2014 they asked me to take over Operation Transformation. It just kept rolling.
