Lacy Talley, Jason Garrett and James Adams Jr. all have Greater Cleveland roots, and each is credited for their work in designing the trophy. The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy will be awarded each year to the NBA’s Social Justice Champion.
Named after Abdul-Jabbar because of his community work off the court, the trophy will be awarded each year to the league’s Social Justice Champion. Los Angeles Laker Carmelo Anthony became the first player to win the award.Lacy Talley, a Cleveland native and graduate of Kent State University, was the art director, while Jason Garrett of Cleveland Heights was the creative director, and is also a KSU graduate.
The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy, designed by Cleveland-based artists, shows the NBA legends hands holding up a clear basketball globe. It's meant to be a metaphor for what athletes can do for the world.Local artists were connected to the trophy work by the Marcus Graham Project, a nonprofit organization that is focused on building diversity among the next generation of designers and marketing leaders.
Yarrell said the Cleveland Cavaliers was the first pro sports team that started working with the nonprofit, helping it organize sports marketing workshops, which the three Cleveland-area designers were MVPs of, Yarrell said. “They’ve just been a big champion of ours and I think the organization really walks and represents what we are about,” Yarell said. The Marcus Graham Project is working on another project that will mark the 55th anniversary of theduring which a press conference was held by Muhammad Ali and other athletes where Ali spoke about his refusal to serve in the U.S. military during the Vietnam war.
