MCD Productions achieved record ticket sales in 2024, thanks in part to Coldplay's sold-out shows at Croke Park. The Irish music scene thrived last year, with major artists like Niall Horan and Hozier also achieving significant success.
Last year's sold-out four nights of Coldplay at Croke Park , generating €44.46 million ($49.52 million) in ticket sales , propelled MCD Productions to a record €238.5 million ($245 million) in ticket sales for 2024. New data from trade industry journal Pollstar reveals that Coldplay 's Dublin shows to 329,000 fans last August and September were the band's most profitable series of concerts globally in 2024.
The Pollstar figures place the band's Croke Park concerts at number 3 in the 'Top 300 Worldwide Concert Grosses,' with U2's two runs of shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas occupying the top two spots, achieving a combined box office of $134.72 million. U2 attained this impressive $134.72 million box office revenue with an average ticket price of $352. Coldplay's Croke Park performances contributed to the band's global ticket sales of $421 million, ranking them second only to Taylor Swift's $1 billion Eras tour. The figures demonstrate that nearly half a million music enthusiasts attended Croke Park throughout 2024, with 489,507 patrons spending $76.49 million to enjoy concerts at the GAA headquarters. Pollstar data positions Croke Park as the 10th busiest stadium globally for concert attendance and the third-ranked venue in Europe last year, significantly outperforming the 229,909 music fans who attended concerts at Wembley Stadium in London. In addition to Coldplay, 82,298 AC/DC fans contributed $14.3 million to Croke Park's concert earnings last August. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift's concerts at Dublin's Aviva Stadium generated $49 million in box office sales, attracting 256,482 attendees. The Irish music scene experienced a boom in 2024, with Niall Horan's 85 shows grossing $68 million at the box office, drawing 1.04 million fans to witness the Mullingar singer-songwriter's performances. Hozier also surpassed the 1 million attendance mark, with 1.02 million fans spending $57.64 million to see the 'Too Sweet' singer-songwriter perform 68 shows. Both artists secured spots within the top 50 global tours for 2024. This flourishing live music landscape contributed to a 'best ever year' for Denis Desmond's Gaiety Investments joint venture with Live Nation, MCD Productions, which sold a record-breaking 2.92 million tickets. This represented a 38.5% increase compared to MCD's 2.11 million ticket sales in 2023, when they recorded $133.48 million (€129.4 million) in ticket sales. MCD's $245 million in ticket sales last year placed the Irish firm as the 10th highest-grossing company globally in terms of box office revenue, with an average ticket price of $83.90 (€81.33). Live Nation secured the top spot with $7.5 billion in ticket sales. A significant driver behind MCD's ticket sales surge was Taylor Swift's series of concerts at the Aviva Stadium in 2024 as part of the European leg of her ERAS tour. However, specific box office figures for Taylor Swift's Aviva performances remain unavailable as the artist opted not to disclose individual box office data
