Columbus City Council approval on Monday of a rezoning request is needed for a nearly $60M Franklin County Mental Health and Addiction Crisis Center.
The Columbus City Council on Monday will consider a rezoning request needed for the planned Franklin County Mental Health and Addiction Crisis Center in the South Franklinton neighborhood.The crisis center, an initiative of Franklin County, the county's Alcohol Drug And Mental Health Board and the Central Ohio Hospital Council, will have an observation unit, a short-term inpatient unit and a walk-in clinic.
That's close to the county's new $360 million jail, being built on Fisher Road west of Downtown. In October 2021, Franklin County Commissioner Kevin Boyce said people who end up in jail are often in crisis themselves, and a mental health facility nearby could help. Jeff Klinger, president of the Central Ohio Hospital Council, said much of the discussion around the need for a crisis center in Franklin County started with local hospital systems.
According to ADAMH, 30,000 mental health crisis episodes are treated in Franklin County each year, mostly in hospital emergency departments. Klinger said that is not the preferred setting to provide care for patients in need of psychiatric help.One in five of Franklin County's 1.3 million residents has a mental health emergency each year, according to ADAMH. One in ten abuse or are dependent on drugs or alcohol.
