Here are some top tips for cleaning your shower screen

The build up of limescale and soap scum - and sometimes mildew as well as pink and black mould - can be a nightmare to get rid of. And since the shower is used for washing, some may choose to avoid harsh chemical remedies.

But one expert has said a commonly used product could actually be causing more harm than good. Glass specialists at MeandMyGlass.co.uk have revealed which cleaning solutions should be avoided and what to use to get a spotless and streak-free finish for your shower screen.READ MORE: Common fast food and takeaway items to be banned from Sunday

Cream cleaners and ammonia-based solvents should be avoided as they can make the glass go streaky, damaging it over time. Instead, the experts suggest using alternatives such as white vinegar, lemons and salt to achieve a spotless finish. John Cutts, glass expert at MeandMyGlass.co.uk said: "It can be challenging to clean a shower screen without leaving streak marks especially when there’s soap scum and mineral build-up. Many assume that common cleaning products like bleach and scouring pads work well in cleaning the glass, but this isn’t the case.

"It can often make them look worse after rinsing with water and can result in a streaky finish. We recommend using acidic fruits like lemon and lime to get rid of tough marks as well as condiments like salt to remove hard-water build up."Using cream cleaner can create a blurry effect on the screen due to the streaks it leaves behind. The product works best on pots and pans to remove stubborn stains, but it can make shower screens appear more dirty.
