The €3.1 million facility, located at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, has been destroyed by Storm Eowyn.
With gusts of up to 183kph in the Connacht region, the highest in recorded history, the dome, which is located at the Connacht centre of excellence in Bekan, Mayo, stood no chance as winds ripped the facility to shreds.
Speaking to RTE Sport, Connacht GAA secretary John Prenty confirmed that the dome came down at around 4am on Friday morning. "We have been unable to get out to the site to assess the damage as the winds are too high," said Mr Prenty, who confirmed that the facility was fully insured and that Connacht GAA intended to rebuild it.
Construction on the multimillion euro facility began in 2019 and was officially opened in 2021. The 150 m by 100 m by 26m contained three pumping stations that inflated the dome and gave it its structure. The facility had been used to house numerous FBD winter League games since 2022 before its destruction.
