Aileen Halligan died following complications from angioplasty at Mater Private Hospital in Cork. Family sues cardiologist, alleging mishandled procedure. Case settled without admission of liability.

A Cork family has received €420,000 in settlement after their mother's death following a routine heart angiogram test at the Mater Private Hospital. Aileen Halligan, a 69-year-old mother of three and grandmother of four from Cobh, passed away on May 31, 2017, after undergoing the procedure to examine blood vessels.

Her daughter Aoife Halligan Brown and sons Shane and Niall Halligan sued consultant interventional cardiologist Abid Hussaini, alleging that the stenting procedure, which involved inserting a stent to unblock a blood vessel, was mishandled and the stent became displaced. They claimed this led to thrombosis and heart failure, ultimately causing Mrs. Halligan's death. \The family's lawyer, Dr. John O'Mahony SC, stated that Mrs. Halligan had initially been scheduled for a relatively straightforward angiogram but subsequently underwent angioplasty, a more complex procedure with higher risks. The family argued that they were not adequately warned of the risks associated with stenting and that the necessary care, diligence, judgement, and skill were not exercised. All claims were denied by the defendant. \Aoife Halligan Brown, speaking outside the court, said the family had endured a seven-year wait for their day in court, adding that monetary compensation could never truly replace their beloved mother. She described the scene in the hospital as chaotic, recalling doctors entering the family room with blood on their shoes and scrubs. Expressing the profound impact of their loss, Ms. Halligan Brown stated: 'What happened has been completely life-changing. We have been left completely devastated by the loss of our beautiful mum.' Justice Paul Coffey, approving the settlement and the division of the statutory mental distress payment of €35,000, conveyed his deepest sympathy to the family, calling the case 'a sad and tragic one'
