Moses Odonker, a popular fisherman from Castletownbere, died tragically at sea after being struck on the head by a rope. This marks the second heartbreaking loss for his family within two years, following the death of his son Joshua in 2023.
Moses Odonker, a fisherman in his 50s, tragically died at sea on Tuesday morning after being struck on the head by a failing rope while working on the trawler, The Boy Jason. The incident occurred around 7 am during a 14-day prawn fishing trip off the Porcupine Bank, approximately 200 km off the west coast of Ireland. Despite the immediate efforts of the skipper and his four crew members to resuscitate Mr. Odonker, he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
The Boy Jason returned to Castletownbere Harbour early Wednesday morning, where Mr. Odonker was pronounced dead by a local doctor. His body was then transported to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death. Mr. Odonker was a well-liked and respected member of the crew for eight years. This tragic event marks the second devastating loss for Mr. Odonker's family in just two years. His two-year-old son, Joshua, passed away in January 2023 after choking on a grape at their family home in Skibbereen. The community has rallied around the family in their time of grief, offering support and condolences.
