Natalie Cambridge from County Cork was diagnosed with breast cancer, two years after her husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer and was required to have surgery
She initially got it checked and was told it was likely breast tissue or muscle, but later wondered if the doctor felt exactly what she was feeling.
She told RSVP Live: “I had found a lump and didn’t think anything of it. My husband wanted me to get it checked. I remember the doctor telling me it was breast tissue or muscle. I don’t think she was feeling what I felt.“As the months passed, it got bigger. Eventually, I knew it was something.”Everything started to “snowball”, the Cork native shared, with her being called in for an appointment around five days later.
“I’m left with lymphedema in my left arm, which swells up every now and then. Under my arm and down into my elbow is all numb.”“If I had been diagnosed when I first found the lump, it might have avoided me going through chemo, the sickness and losing my hair.” “She found it early and had a small surgery and a few weeks of radiotherapy and she was great after it. She avoided chemotherapy because she got it checked early.”“I started a cholesterol tablet before I was diagnosed. I also remember saying that I didn’t have much of an appetite, but I wasn’t necessarily losing weight. My taste was also pretty funny.
