Web Summit founder defends instigating anonymous Facebook advertising campaign

Mr Cosgrave said granting tax breaks to multinationals designed to create jobs “on sometimes very narrow grounds of national self-interest” was arguably defensible. “But in the case of property funds who extract all the cash out of Ireland and create no jobs, I’m not so sure that is such a good idea.”Pressed on whether it was legitimate to anonymously troll people on the internet to achieve his aims, he said it was.

Mr Cosgrave said his anonymous campaign had gained international attention “so now journalists aroundare writing articles about this carry on in Ireland, and I think that will bring enhanced international pressure on Ireland to close these egregious tax loopholes.” He added it was “the patriotic duty of any citizen is to pursue laws - and these are legalised tax loopholes - that are damaging to the interests of most people in this country.”

“The only people who benefit from these particular tax loopholes are a very narrow subset of professional services firms and international property funds and I think that is wrong and should be stopped,” he said.
