At the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, Renault driver Nelson Piquet, Jr. crashed, triggering a safety car period that shuffled the race order and helped his teammate, Fernando Alonso, to the win. Massa, driving for Ferrari, went from the lead to a P13 finish, a drop compounded by a disastrous pit stop in which he pulled away before his team had disconnected his car’s fuel hose . A few weeks later, Massa lost the championship by a single point to a whippersnapper by the name of Lewis Hamilton.
A change to the NASCAR race format on road courses this season eliminated pre-planned yellow flags and has allowed the races to largely play out naturally. But NASCAR teams are accustomed to having many caution periods and restarts, which calls for a different type of strategy.
