A top GAA official has cast doubt on the possibility of a Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano rematch taking place at Croke Park. Peter McKenna, the GAA's commercial manager, stated that there hasn't been any recent contact from Eddie Hearn, Taylor's promoter, regarding the event. McKenna also highlighted logistical challenges and scheduling conflicts, pointing to pre-existing commitments for the stadium, such as concerts by Oasis and Robbie Williams. He dismissed concerns about security costs as a major obstacle, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive event plan and city council approval.
A top GAA official has poured cold water on the prospect of Katie Taylor fighting Amando Serrano at Croke Park . Taylor’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has mooted the possibility of the pair facing off at GAA headquarters in what would be third fight after Taylor won the previous super lightweight title bouts in New York and Arlington, Texas in 2022 and November last respectively.
Hearn, who heads up Matchroom Sport, said in 2022 that security costs at Croke Park made the venue prohibitive to staging such an event, something which was strongly contested by the stadium director and the GAA’s commercial manager Peter McKenna at the time. And despite Hearn suggesting last month that Jake Paul, who fought Mike Tyson on the same card as the last Taylor-Serrano fight, “will get on a plane and come and see the Croke Park boys with me”, McKenna said there has been no recent contact. “Being honest, Eddie hasn't been in touch with us,” said McKenna. “It flashes up every so often but no, we haven't been contacted. “It's trying to find out where would be the slot. I think the difficulty there is that what's the style of the event? And what time of the year it would be on? We have Oasis and Robbie Williams . So, the calendar, really there's not a lot of space to say, 'Yeah, I could fit it in on that weekend', or whatever.” McKenna again dismissed the suggestion that security costs are a game-breaker in terms of Croke Park hosting a Taylor fight. “I don't think it is. The approach seems to be megaphone diplomacy, throw everything at it and something will happen in that sense. Katie Taylor is a magnificent athlete and I think everyone is very, very proud of what she's achieved as an athlete. But to fill Croke Park with 80,000, you need an undercard, you need a whole razmatazz to go with it. “Those things can't be done in a short period of time. Even getting an event management plan together, getting the city council to approve it and so on. There'd be a fair bit of work in that. So I think it's a kite flyer rather than a genuine , so I can't see it happening because we haven't heard about it, bar reading in the papers.” Last year, Croke Park hosted rugby games for the first time 2010 and there will be at least one more there this year, as Leinster take on Harlequins in the European Champions Cup on April 5 - though McKenna doesn’t envisage rugby becoming a regular fixture in the longer term. “What we're doing for Leinster, and it's based on a very, very good relationship with the IRFU, the RDS is being refurbished, they're putting a new stand in there and Leinster need an alternative venue so they came to ourselves. “The round of 16 match will be on and then if Leinster do particularly well, probably look at a URC semi-final, maybe a final indeed depending on how the team does. “So what we're really doing is just facilitating Leinster while the RDS is being refurbished. I think once that happens then they'll probably go back to the normal.” On the prospect of a Champions Cup final being played at Croke Park, McKenna said: “Well, if the IRFU asked us to do that, we would, but we're not going to kind of hop in. It's important that we have a collegiate relationship.
