Channel confirms popular celebrity skating show will not return for its 20th anniversary due to declining viewership.
Holly Willoughby , a long-time star of ITV , finds herself without a show on the channel for the first time in 21 years. This follows ITV 's confirmation that Dancing on Ice will not return for its 20th anniversary, marking the end of an era for the skating competition.
Willoughby, who co-hosted the show with Philip Schofield from 2006 until her brief departure in 2011 and then rejoined in 2018, reminisced about her time on Dancing on Ice on social media, thanking the team, celebrities, and viewers. Notably, Schofield was absent from both the post and the accompanying images. ITV cited declining ratings as a reason for the show's pause, with viewership dropping significantly from its peak of around 12 million to just 2.7 million for the recent finale. The final season, presented by Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern, saw an overall decrease in viewership, starting with 2.9 million and dropping to 2.4 million by the end. The decision to pause the show was made after another successful series, but the network acknowledged the end of an era for Dancing on Ice and thanked all involved for their hard work. Beyond declining viewership, the show faced other challenges, including the consistent failure of female celebrities to secure the win, despite their skill level on the ice. Though Michaela Strachan was a strong contender this year, Corrie star Sam Aston ultimately triumphed, continuing a trend that has frustrated many fans. Dancing on Ice debuted in 2006 and experienced a hiatus from 2014 to 2018. After its revival, it continued to attract a devoted audience, but the recent dip in ratings has led to a difficult decision for ITV. For now, the future of Dancing on Ice remains uncertain
