Ireland's first ever Olympic male gold medalist is also an actor and the La Defence arena rose to acclaim him on the biggest stage
He talks the talk and he walks the walk. Better than that, he swims the swim on the greatest of all stages.Wiffen became Ireland's first ever male Olympic pool finalist on Monday. He is now Ireland's first ever male Olympic gold medal winner, reaching and touching first in a dramatic 800m Freestyle final at the La Defense Arena.
But Wiffen has been like the Terminator in this raucous arena, reeling in his rivals and eliminating them mercilessly. There was only going to be one winner as the block surged into view. Has Ireland ever had an athlete like Daniel Wiffen? We are not used to our Olympic hopefuls bigging themselves up the way this 23-year-old does.
He is just different, from that appearance with his twin brother Nathan in the famous Red Wedding episode of Game of Thrones to breaking records that Irish swimmers have never before threatened.Wiffen, whose main focus was the 1500m Freestyle, broke the European short course 800m record. In doing so, he broke through the glass ceiling as the first Irish swimmer to hold a European record.
