The trial of Vikat Bhagat, accused of murdering backpacker Danielle McLaughlin in India in 2017, is reaching its conclusion after multiple delays.
The trial of Danielle McLaughlin's rape and murder in India is nearing a conclusion after almost eight years. Danielle, 28, from Buncrana, Co Donegal, was found dead in a secluded spot in Canacona, Goa, on March 14, 2017. She had attended a Holi party the night before and was brutally raped and murdered. Vikat Bhagat , a local man, has been charged with her rape and murder, pleading not guilty. The trial, which began on July 4, 2017, was originally set to conclude on July 17, 2023.
However, it has been extended multiple times, with the latest deadline set for February 17, 2025. Despite representations made by Irish and British diplomats, the trial has progressed slowly, becoming one of the longest-running murder trials globally. The trial has now reached the final arguments stage, where both the prosecution and defense will present their cases. Bhagat has concluded his statement, which took nearly a month to hear. Danielle's heartbroken mother, Andrea Brannigan, hopes for a verdict before February 4, 2025, which would have been Danielle's 36th birthday.
