Limerick Pride have said that the organisation wishes to send a 'strong message' that the Defence Forces would not be 'welcome to participate' in this year’s parade while in uniform

Limerick Pride has said that members of the Defence Forces in uniform "are not welcome to participate” in this year's parade as the group slam the suspended sentence given to violent attacker Cathal Crotty after being found guilty for assault causing harm.

Protests erupted nationwide following Crotty's sentencing last week, the private was spared jail by Judge O Donnell, who has since announced he is stepping down and instead ordered to pay a €3,000 fine as he was given a three-year suspended sentence. He is now facing an internal investigation by the Defence Forces.

A statement on the Limerick Pride website read: “Limerick Pride Festival would like to send a strong message that the Defence Forces are not welcome to participate in Limerick Pride in uniform on July 13. Pride is and always will be a protest!
