The army career of convicted soldier Cathal Crotty is “effectively over” although his dismissal from the Defence Forces could take some time, well-placed sources say.
While the 22-year-old could face outright dismissal for a serious offence such as this in a civilian court, that could be open to an appeal. In a statement, the Defence Forces commended the bravery of Crotty’s victim. Without naming him, the statement unequivocally condemned “any actions by serving personnel that are contrary to or do not reflect our values”.
