The Derryman was the greatest manager in League of Ireland history. Nobody would seriously argue otherwise. A man of such deep football knowledge that Bob Paisley, who had few close confidantes, thought the world of him.

In the summer of 1978, Liverpool were generally regarded as the greatest club team in the world. They'd just retained the European Cup and Kenny Dalglish had capped a superb first season at Anfield with 31 goals.

Kevin Sheedy would struggle for game-time but became one of the best players in the League when he moved to Everton. None of the trio would make the cut at Liverpool but it's worth considering why Paisley moved for them - it showed the immense trust he had in Jim McLaughlin. As a player, McLaughlin was a striker and had a decent career, starting out with Derry City at 16 before moving to the UK where he played for six clubs including Birmingham City and Swansea.

For good measure, McLaughlin's side reached the last 16 of the European Cup in 1980, going out 3-2 on aggregate to Celtic.
