Renowned landscape designer Diarmuid Gavin shares his personal experience transforming his own garden into a contemporary oasis. His journey from initial design challenges to the realization of a unique second-level terrace and roof showcases his passion for architecture, plants, and outdoor living.
Diarmuid Gavin , a renowned landscape design er, moved to Wicklow, Ireland, 14 years ago with his family. Their new home was a modern house situated on a third of an acre of sloping lawn in a new housing estate at the foot of the Sugarloaf mountain.Initially, Gavin faced challenges with the garden's poor soil, rocks, and compaction from construction machinery. His initial vision was a contemporary garden filled with plants, a lawn for recreation, and a space for vegetable gardening.
The ambition was to create an outdoor haven where they could enjoy spending time as a family.Over time, Gavin's design concept evolved. He envisioned a second-level terrace and roof with a wide veranda, inspired by finding nine cast-iron columns in a reclamation yard. These former supports from Jervis Street Hospital in Bristol would underpin the structure, allowing him to incorporate an outdoor living space overlooking the garden. The veranda would provide a unique perspective for showcasing his passion for architectural plants like tree ferns. He gradually transformed the back of the house, replacing windows with glass doors to seamlessly connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. The construction of the veranda ultimately led to a significant architectural change, further blurring the lines between the house and the garden. For Gavin, gardening at home is both a profession and a cherished hobby. He finds fulfillment in nurturing the garden and watching it evolve over the years
