'I just want to get out of these four walls'
A disabled woman who has been unable to leave her home without help for four years says she had vital care support taken away - after she was given an electric wheelchair by a local charity.
Due to her conditions, Clare requires a wheelchair and until recently, had been using a manual one. She says she was refused a motorised device on the NHS, and was told she'd need to get funding for one, which cost around £700.But thanks to the support of a local charity, Depher, she was able to raise the money she needed for a new chair. The Burnley community group is run by James Anderson, a well-known 'hero plumber' who supports vulnerable people in the community.
The gate to her garden is too narrow for the new chair, and needs to be widened, meaning two carers are needed to get her out of her chair and through the gate, to lift herself and the battery. Lancashire County Council has since withdrawn her single carer, she says. and Claire has been told she will need to undergo a new assessment,
"We went out, me and my other carer in my wheelchair and we hit a pothole in the middle of the road and they bolted me up right and broke my wheelchair, so then my carer had to ring somebody in the office to get someone to come out and rescue us because there were some people just being damn right ignorant, pipping and swearing.Lancashire County Council has since confirmed a team will be sent out to Claire this week to reassess her needs.
