A new RTÉ documentary features disgraced solicitor Michael Lynn admitting his 'drugged up ambition' fueled his desire to succeed. The documentary also highlights the stories of ordinary people who lost thousands of euros to Lynn's fraudulent schemes.

Disgraced former solicitor Michael Lynn admitted that his “drugged up ambition” was “fuelled by the desire to succeed” in a never heard before recording. In a new RTÉ documentary that will air tonight, viewers will hear from the ordinary people who lost thousands at the hands of Mr Lynn. The Mayo man was convicted in December 2023 of stealing almost €18m in a huge scam from various banks after a decades-long international manhunt.

He owed another €12m to private investors who had paid out for unbuilt apartments abroad. In 2008, the Crossmolina-born solicitor fled to Portugal before setting up in a luxury house in Pernambuco, Brazil. However, his life of luxury soon came crashing down as he was sent to a “hellhole prison” in Brazil while awaiting extradition to Ireland. Mr Lynn was jailed for five and a half years and is still under investigation for money laundering. His crimes were committed in 2007-2008 when he drew down multiple mortgages against different properties he owned. An RTÉ documentary on the convicted thief airs tonight. Viewers will hear clips from the only interview he has agreed to do publicly. He told journalist Michael O’Farrell: 'I was on my own personal drugged up ambition, fuelled by the desire to succeed. I was the Celtic Cub. “I am disappointed I lost some of my fundamentals I learned as a young fella. I have let my family down and myself down.” When Mr Flynn fled the country it was known that he had conned the banks, however, it wasn’t immediately clear that he had taken millions from ordinary people. Paul Ryan, a retired PE Teacher from Dublin, had €60,000 stolen after he paid a deposit to buy an apartment in Portugal. He told the documentary: “I felt a terrible sense of guilt that I had lost all this money. The apartment.
