.Family background Born in Kilkenny in 1970, DJ was raised in a large sporting family with three brothers and three sisters.
It isn’t just his immediate family that was involved in sports, many members of DJ’s extended family also played hurling and camogie. His aunt Peggy Carey won four All-Ireland camogie titles with Kilkenny and his granduncle, Paddy Phelan, was an inter-county hurler of the 1930s and was selected on the GAA Hurling Team of the Century and the GAA Team of The Millennium.
Playing for Kilkenny DJ became known as a hurler while he was in school and proceeded to play for Kilkenny minor and senior teams. DJ retired in 2006 following 138 National League and Championship appearances. He won five All-Irelands, ten Leinster Championships and four National Hurling League titles during his time as a player.
