Besides belly fat, Dr. Tara Swart says stress can appear on your skin
An expert has warned stress could cause belly fat that is "really hard to shift". Speaking to Diary Of A CEO podcast host Steven Bartlett in his latest episode, neuroscientist Dr. Tara Swart issued a stark message about cortisol and body fat.
"But when that level is above the top range all the time, these receptors in your brain basically think that there's an imminent threat to your survival so there's this whole cascade of hormones and they're basically cortisol causes inflammation in the body. So, inflammation of your vascular system, inflammation around your heart, gut and everything else."
"So, you know in the cave, if you were potentially going to not find food for a month, then if you had extra fat around your abdomen, you could digest that and survive until you could find food." Listing the signs and symptoms that indicate you likely have high levels of cortisol, the expert went into depth about sleep, mood and skin. "Because cortisol is part of the 24-hour clock, melatonin help us to fall asleep and cortisol helps us to wake up.
