Galway had a 16-point lead when Matthew Tierney was dismissed on half-time and suffered black cards to Daniel O'Flaherty and Finnian Ó Laoi in the second half but were never in danger as they leapfrogged Donegal to go to the top of the Division One table.
Windswept days are a given in Salthill, but this was extreme even by Pearse Stadium standards.
That Meath game three years ago that Walsh referenced saw Galway build up a 1-9 to 0-0 half-time lead and keep Meath scoreless for the first 45 minutes and there were certain similarities here. Surprisingly, Donegal won the toss but opted to play into the elements in the first half. “Padraic said in the huddle just before the game to have a go, I suppose,” Walsh explained. “The conditions that were there, even last week, we didn't make enough on the scoreboard. Today was just about making sure.
“Nowadays you’re wondering is it enough,” said Galway boss Padraic Joyce. “We thought we needed it to be 20. It’s a strange thing to be saying! But I said to the lads at half-time, if we can get four points, they have to get 20 to beat us. So, we got four; it was enough.” Yet the comeback was never on, even though Galway played much of the second half with 13 players as Daniel O’Flaherty and Finnian Ó Laoi were black-carded.
“We had a couple of lads with niggles. We didn't want to take too many risks with them. So we didn't put them into the firing line. Galway got the scores on the board and it was probably a wee bit too much in the end for us to draw back.”
