Dr Tony Holohan issues warning to parents as 'considerable concern' emerges over Delta variant
The country has recorded a significant spike in new Covid-19 cases with 783 people getting infected with the disease as NPHET warns there is “a cause for considerable concern".Dr Tony Holohan has warned everyone who is unvaccinated to be “cautious” as Ireland is now in the “beginnings” of exponential growth due to the Delta variant.
“Where we typically had two admissions every five days to intensive care, we are now looking at an average of an admission per day.“The growth rate now is similar to or perhaps slightly less than the growth rates we saw through August, September and October of last year, but starting from a higher base.
"Delta also appears to be presenting with a different variety of symptoms than we have seen with other variants, including headache, sore throat and blocked or runny nose. Children will be allowed to eat inside pubs and restaurants next week with fully vaccinated parents under the government’s plans to reopen indoor dining.
Meanwhile, Dr Cillian De Gascun, Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory said: “While Delta prevalence continues to increase, the available data in relation to vaccine effectiveness continues to be reassuring.
