Irish Gardaí apprehended a motorist driving at an alarming speed exceeding the legal limit by over 80km/h, while also testing positive for drugs. Utilizing their new fleet of unmarked high-powered Volkswagen Golf GTIs, equipped with advanced technology, Gardaí made the arrest on a Limerick motorway.
Gardaí in an unmarked vehicle have apprehended a motorist driving at over 80km/h above the speed limit while under the influence of drugs. Last December, Gardaí deployed a number of unmarked motorcycles and high-powered Volkswagen Golf GTIs with the Roads Policing fleet to ensure safer Irish roads.
The fleet of unmarked GTIs is equipped with cutting-edge systems, including on-board cameras and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), to identify unlicensed or uninsured drivers, track stolen vehicles, and enforce road traffic laws efficiently. Utilizing these vehicles, Gardaí traveling in one of the unmarked GTIs on a motorway in Limerick this week clocked a driver speeding along at 202km/h, more than 80km/h above the speed limit. The driver also failed a roadside drug test. In a social media post, Gardaí confirmed the dangerous driver is due in court and a sample of their blood was taken and sent for analysis. A Garda spokesperson wrote: “We were out checking speed on the motorways around Limerick this morning and picked up this driver going traveling 202km/h - over 80km/h above the limit. The driver also failed a roadside drug test. “This is more than a fine and penalty points for speeding. This is a charge of dangerous driving and has led to a court appearance. The driver's blood sample taken during arrest has been sent for analysis.”It is an offence to drive dangerously in a public place. If you are convicted of dangerous driving, you could be fined up to €5,000, or be sent to prison for up to six months, or both. Alongside this, the maximum penalty for drink or drug driving is a €5,000 fine and/or imprisonment for up to six months. All drink driving offences result in disqualification from driving for at least three months
