Drug-resistant bug warning for Irish holidaymakers as illness surges through Spain tourist hotspots
Irish holidaymakers are being warned about a potentially deadly stomach bug that is spreading in popular tourist hotspots.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control have recorded a total 300 cases of the highly contagious illness since April this year. “The cases are linked to seven national and international distinct microbiological clusters, with chains of transmission largely, but not exclusively, among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.
A post on its website said: “Shigellosis is a bacterial infection affecting the intestinal tract. It is caused by the bacterium Shigella. Anyone can be infected but children are particularly prone. The bacteria cannot survive for long outside the human body.
