David and Emma Mills from County Dublin had just come back from holidays when their daughter Zoe, 10 months old at the time, became sick and wasn’t sleeping well
Zoe Mills was 10 months old when she was diagnosed with nerve cell cancer after becoming suddenly unwell.
Her parents, David and Emma, shared that they are looking to fundraise for maintenance therapy that is only available in America as the cancer has a high relapse rate.David said: “She was diagnosed in August 2023 and she was 10 months old. She was fine up until 10 months before the diagnosis. We were on holidays and she was fine. We came back home and we noticed that she wasn’t sleeping well. We thought she was just readjusting after holidays, but she got worse over the week.
Her mother, Emma, explained that doctors don’t know how or when Zoe’s tumour started growing, as neuroblastoma is different in nearly every person. “It’s so difficult to comprehend. My brain stopped working and the fear descended. It was utter panic mode. It was really, really difficult to breath,” Emma said. “Even trying to think back on it now, I find it really hard.
“Thankfully, she got through each of the stages to get us to where we are now, but at the start it was very tough. We were in hospital for seven weeks initially and between August and Christmas, you could count the number of times we spent at home on two hands.”
