Dublin GAA's proposed training facility at Spawell has attracted three appeals, citing concerns regarding traffic impact, parking provision, and the need for a stand and terraces.
A number of appeals have been lodged against Dublin GAA’s proposed training facility at the Spawell site on the south side of the city. It has been Dublin’s long-time ambition to develop such a facility on the site just off the M50, which was bought for €9m back in 2017. It would include four pitches, three of them floodlit, a stand and terracing to accommodate 1,000 people in total, an indoor training complex, dressing rooms, hurling wall and an all-weather surface.
Dublin GAA submitted revised plans in October to allay concerns around its impact on the traffic and environment, but three appeals have been submitted in the meantime, including one from the local Orwell Park Residents’ Association, reports RTE. There are calls for the main entrance/exit to be relocated to the M50 slip road and N81, with the group claiming that there will be a negative impact on traffic flow on Wellington Lane, as well as raising concerns around the perceived inadequate level of parking to be provided at the facility amid fears that it will impact on nearby housing estates. A separate group of residents also raised concerns about the proposed Wellington Lane/Rossmore Road entrance while saying that the construction of a stand and terraces were 'simply an unnecessary add-on to the high-performance facility”. A ruling by An Bord Pleanála on the various appeals is expected to be made by the end of May 2025
