Eamon Ryan, who is a Dublin Bay South TD, made the announcement today, adding that he won't be running to retain his seat as a TD in the general election next year either
Eamon Ryan has revealed the reason why he's stepping down as leader of the Green Party - he wants to spend more time with family.
"I have parenting commitments at home which I also want to serve. We have a son with special needs who also requires my attention. My wife Victoria White has been my greatest support and inspiration. I want to thank her and all my family and friends who have been at my side at all times. He also said the time has come to "pass the torch to a new generation of leaders", according to RTÉ. He thanked everyone who voted for him over the years, adding that he will continue in his roles until a new leader is appointed. The Green Party will elect a new leader to "take the party forward", he added, while a local party group will select a new candidate to run in the Dublin Bay South constituency for the next general election, due to be held next year.
He also said he believes the current government will go to a full term, despite his resignation coming after Leo Varadkar's resignation as Fine Gael leader just a few months prior.
