Emma told how it was an “absolute whirlwind” and how she was uncertain about how she was going to feel after the surgery, and worried “that mentally, it would really affect me”
An Irish woman who was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer has told how it is important to “advocate for our own bodies” — and to “not feel afraid to go and get something checked” if needed. She told Chic how, at the time, she felt she “probably had never been healthier in my life” as she was “training lots, and eating really healthy” — and how she was “having a great time, loving life” after she and her mum had recently celebrated milestone birthdays with a trip to Las Vegas.
She continued, “I told him at the time, ‘no, I don’t, I’m not very breast aware to be honest — and my friends wouldn’t be, either’.“He didn’t examine me that day. He just said, ‘I’m going to refer you to the clinic and get someone to check you over, to see if we can get to the bottom of this’. “When I look back, I was so naive thinking about it. I just kept saying, ‘isn’t it amazing that they’re doing all this for me? It’s brilliant’. I was not thinking, ‘Emma, there’s a reason why you’re getting all these follow-up tests — it’s not just because you’re here’.Emma told she was told that she would likely be called back to the clinic in a few weeks — but a few days later, she got a phone call asking her to come back in to see Professor Hill.
“Eventually, I just asked him, ‘are you trying to tell me that I have cancer?’ And he said, ‘yes, I am’. .She said, “I just genuinely did not care. I was just so relieved that they had removed the cancer. That might sound really weird, but I was just so happy that it was gone that I didn’t mind. She said, “They held a fundraiser day for Breast Cancer Ireland, the charity who I do a bit of work with now.
“And just to put the awareness out there that the younger you are, and that you’re breast aware, the more likely you are to spot something that’s not normal. You get to know what your normal is. The teacher said, “I tried to break it down into like, manageable sections: week by week, appointment by appointment. That helped me not get so overwhelmed by everything.
“But I was just really happy to be informed. I thought, ‘OK, it’s something else — but we’ll keep going’.” “I didn’t know if that was going to be on the cards for me. I didn’t know what way my body would be after treatment, and stuff. “I have amazing family and friends, and I’m doing a bit of stuff for Breast Cancer Ireland when I can.
