Venice is set to enforce a new rule starting to tackle over-tourism - with those breaching it facing fines of up to €500

Venice is set to cap tourist groups at a maximum of 25 people in an effort to control the overwhelming crowds that flock to the iconic city. This measure, which was initially planned for June, will come into effect from August 1.

The picturesque city has been battling with the effects of over-tourism, where excessive visitor numbers detract from the experience for both locals and tourists. Earlier this year, Venice became the first city worldwide to test a visitor payment system aimed at discouraging peak-period day-trippers. The pilot, closely watched by other European tourist hotspots, lasted 29 days and recently concluded, leading to a consultation phase to refine the project.
