The Portaferry native finished fourth in Budapest after giving herself every chance of winning Ireland's first World Championship medal on the track in 28 years
Fans hailed Ciara Mageean as "world class" after the Co Down runner finished just outside the medal positions in the 1500m final at the World Athletics Championships on Tuesday evening.
Another wrote: "Ciara is class everything about her is just class her attitude the way she races such a competitor and gives it everything she ran a Clever race finished strong Africans are unreal however Ciara be proud of her run and I know 4th a hard place to finish however next year Paris." Mageean left herself with a chance of winning a medal in the final lap and was was third coming down the home straight before battling to the line as she narrowly lost out to Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands as Diribe Welteji of Ethiopia took silver.
