Jagtar, from Dumbarton, said that he was detained and subjected to torture, including electric shocks

The brother of a Scots man detained in India for five years without trial has called the Foreign Secretary's lack of support in campaigning for his release a "slap in the face".

Meeting with the Foreign Secretary in Westminster on Monday to press the UK Government to bring home Jagtar, his brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal, said the meeting had been filled with "empty words". "As I told Mr Cleverly, trials brought by India’s National Investigations Agency can drag on for decades. What we need from the Foreign Secretary is decisive action; what we got is more empty words.”

The pair feel that this latest meeting represented a "significant backwards step", given that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson acknowledged that there is no legal basis for Jagtar's detention, echoing the findings of a panel of UN legal experts, back in June. Reprieve's Director of Advocacy, Dan Dolan, said: “By failing to seek Jagtar’s release, the UK Government is effectively condemning him to indefinite arbitrary detention in India. It’s obviously not in Jagtar’s ‘best interests’ to languish in prison abandoned by the British Government.
