The family of a Lithuanian man found dead after six years missing believe his death was no accident and are calling for a full inquiry.

The family of a man found dead in a field, after being missing for six years, believe his death was no accident. Two sisters of Lithuanian Tomas Martinkus say his disappearance is suspicious and are demanding that gardai hold a full-scale inquiry into his case. Officers initially ruled there was no foul play involved. Tomas had been living and working around Strokestown, Co Roscommon for over two years when he vanished in December 2018 at the age of 29.

Extensive searches in the local area were carried out and no one could find him. But, a few weeks before Christmas and almost six years to the day since he vanished, skeletal remains were found on local farmland. Marija and Viktorija told Shannonside Radio: “We believe his death is suspicious. His body was found near the house in the fields and we don’t understand how nobody could find him in six years. He must have been underground. That’s the only explanation. Helicopters, dogs and so many people around the whole area were looking for him. We do not believe his death was an accident.” The family also publicly thanked all the local people who had searched for him over the years. A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said in a statement: “Gardai in Co Roscommon received a report of the discovery of skeletal remains on farmland in Strokestown on December 1, 2024. “The deceased was identified through DNA analysis and gardai are liaising with his family and providing support. A file will be prepared for the Coroner. Following the discovery the missing person appeal in respect of Tomas Martinkus has been stood down.
