Endometriosis is a complex condition affecting many women, and while there is no definitive treatments, there are ways to manage and alleviate uncomfortable symptoms
Endometriosis is a complex condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterine cavity. This tissue responds to the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle, causing inflammation, pain, and swelling when it becomes trapped outside the uterus. Although endometriosis is most often associated with severe menstrual pain, it can present in a range of other surprising ways.
Common signs of endometriosis include heavy periods and pelvic pain. Here are five other surprising symptoms to look out for, according to Dr. Jennifer. Urinary Discomfort: Endometriosis can sometimes affect the bladder, causing painful urination or even blood in the urine during menstruation. "These symptoms are often mistaken for a urinary tract infection but can signal endometrial tissue near the bladder," Dr. Jennifer tells us.
Unfortunately there is no cure for endometriosis, but conventional treatments focus on managing symptoms with hormonal therapy, which may involve inducing a pharmaceutical menopause using contraceptives or GnRH analogues. However, these treatments do not address the root causes of the disease. Prioritise Sleep: The doctor advises: "Ensure adequate sleep to support detoxification and reduce inflammation."
