The U.S. qualified for the 2022 World Cup on Wednesday night, and so I took a look at the schedule for the greatest sports competition on the planet.
It was always in the back of my mind that the World Cup would be a winter carnival this time around, but with the Americans back in the big show I finally got around to checking the calendar. And, oh wow. When will we ever sleep? If the U.S. survives its group-stage competition, then the knockout stages of the World Cup begin on Saturday, Dec.3. That’s the day of the SEC championship game.Oh, and don’t forget the No-Doz and Red Bull.
Hopefully the local breweries are reading this and preparing to remain open 24 hours a day. Is that legal? I don’t care. It was a lack of determination by the Americans that ruined the USMNT four years ago. No matter what happens from here, at least the U.S. is back among the world’s best. Anything is possible now.
Four years ago, when the U.S. lost to Trinidad and Tobago, plans were in the works to bring professional soccer to Birmingham. Part of the new club’s momentum was tied to the USMNT playing that summer. Missing the World Cup felt like a blow to that energy, but Birmingham Legion FC has been a major success for the city.
